Terra Vivente, the Living Earth, is an artistic journey designed to explore the richness of the soil as both the inspiring muse and the material to create with. The exhibition gathers a body of artists who, in a variety of languages, are moved to interpret their relationship to the earth. On the one hand the earth itself becomes art, explicitly in the ceramic, sculptures and paintings, leading to an immediate sensual experience, and on the other the earth observed and transcribed in the language of photography and painting portraying the abstract beauty of the land and prehistoric animals considered both in the detail of the near view and also from far.

Terra Vivente è un viaggio artistico volto all’esplorazione della ricchezza del suolo, al tempo stesso musa ispiratrice e materia creativa. L’esposizione, sviluppata ed arricchita di anno in anno da Nous Art Gallery, raccoglie un corpus di artisti che si spingono ad interpretare, attraverso molteplici linguaggi, la loro relazione con la terra. Se da un lato la materia diviene arte, esplicitandosi nelle ceramiche, sculture e pitture, percorso ed esperienza sensoriale, dall’altra la terra è osservata e trascritta attraverso il linguaggio della fotografia e della pittura, nella bellezza astratta dei paesaggi e degli animali preistorici, bilanciando dettagli e visioni lontane.

ANDREA MARINI  SCULPTURE

Andrea Marini was born in Florence where he earned his artistic maturity and degree in architecture. He lives in Florence and carries out his artistic activity, which began in the late 1980s, in an industrial-type space in Calenzano (Florence). Starting from the awareness of a reality in which the relationship between man and nature is subject to continuous manipulations and alterations, his artistic path develops in the research and re-creation of a new “world” where the boundary between the real and the fantastic is very fleeting. His research thus becomes a desire for a new birth, a bodily metamorphosis and a poetic transformation for a different vision of reality.

Andrea Marini è nato a Firenze dove ha conseguito la maturità artistica e la laurea in architettura.
Vive a Firenze e svolge la sua attività artistica, iniziata alla fine degli anni ’80, in uno spazio di tipo industriale in località Calenzano (Firenze). Partendo dalla consapevolezza di una realtà in cui il rapporto uomo-natura è soggetto a continue manipolazioni e alterazioni, il suo percorso artistico si sviluppa nella ricerca e nella ri-creazione di un nuovo “mondo” dove il confine tra il reale e il fantastico è molto labile. La sua ricerca diventa dunque desiderio di nuova nascita, di metamorfosi corporea e trasformazione poetica per una diversa visione del reale.

TERRY DAVIES CERAMIC

Ceramic artist Terry Davies was born in the United Kingdom. Following an extensive training in the historic Leach tradition, he travelled widely on a voyage of discovery and study, taking him to some of the world’s greatest ceramic centres. He settled in Tuscany 20 years ago where his pottery studio is located on a hilltop overlooking Certaldo. His experimental approach to texture and form has won him many international awards and exhibitions, with his ‘pelle d’elefante’ technique receiving much praise. The look and feel of this distinctive finish is that of cracked or burnt earth. Davies shares his passion for ceramic art with the public in the form of large-scale experimental kiln firings often using recycled materials, such as glass bottles and paper, taking place in piazzas around Italy and drawing crowds in the thousands to the main squares of Lucca, San Gimignano, Firenze and Faenza. These unique cultural events are an alchemical fusion of earth, water, fire and air.

Terry Davies, ceramista, è nato in Inghilterra. Cultore della storica tradizione della ceramica di Bernard Leach, ha viaggiato molto, in un percorso di scoperta alla ricerca dei più grandi centri per la ceramica al mondo. Si è stabilito in Toscana venti anni fa, in uno studio sulla sommità di una collina che domina il borgo di Certaldo. Il suo approccio sperimentale alla materia e alla forma: la sua distintiva tecnica a ‘pelle d’elefante’, terra bruciata e screpolata, gli ha portato riconoscimenti ed esposizioni internazionali. Davies condivide la passione per la ceramica d’arte con il suo pubblico attraverso attività laboratoriali, dove, tra arte e performance, sperimenta cotture in forni improvvisati, realizzati spesso attraverso materiali di recupero come bottiglie di vetro e carta, raggruppando folle di appassionati nelle principali piazze di Lucca, San Gimignano, Firenze e Faenza, spettacolari eventi, alchemica fusione di terra, acqua, fuoco e aria.

ULE EWELT SCULPTURE

Ule Ewelt was born in Germany, she lives and creates in the countryside of Grünberg, Hesse. She studied geography and city planning, then turned her attention to ceramics in 2003. Since 2011 her art is purely figurative and focuses on the representation of animals. Our near neighbours since the beginning of human existence, animals elicit images, memories, feelings and associations in intense and often highly symbolic ways. They figure in all mythologies. Early humans were latecomers in a world shaped and dominated by animals constituting not only a source of food but also a dangerous threat. Delving into the archaic animal representations in the fabulous caves of Lascaux and Chauvet in the south of France, she made the relationship between humans and animals at the time of the origins of humankind the central focus of her work. She came deeply to admire the way our prehistoric ancestors captured in just a few lines the inner nature of the animals they drew. It is centrally important to her to capture the internal motion of the animals she draws in a dynamic snapshot. In her work strives to build a mental connection with archaic forms of presentation.

Ule Ewelt è nata nel 1967 a Gießen, Hesse. Si appassionata alla ceramica figurativa all’età di 16 anni ma ha trovato la sua strada come professionista ceramista molto più tardi. Dopo essersi laureata in geografia nel 1997 a Marburg, ha lavorato per sei anni come urbanista e paesaggista in un dipartimento nel centro di Hesse. Durante questo periodo, ha realizzato una serie di opere figurative che hanno sempre avuto a che fare con animali in movimento. Nel 2002, si è dimessa dal lavoro di progettista per concedersi più spazio per l’attività da ceramista. Nel 2003 ha aperto uno studio a Grünberg-Stangenrod, un piccolo villaggio ai margini dei monti Vogelsberg. Nel 2006 è stata la prima ceramista autodidatta ad unirsi alla corporazione dei ceramisti di Hesse. Ule si è concentrata sulla ceramica figurativa dal 2011, e dal 2013 si è dedicata completamente alle sculture di animali ed esperimenti di varie tecniche di cottura.

KACPER KOWALSKI PHOTOGRAPHY

Kacper Kowalski, a Polish artist, lives and works in Gdynia, Poland. Having previously worked in architecture, Kowalski chose to devote himself entirely to flying and photography. As both a pilot and photographer, he takes meticulously detailed aerial pictures of diverse natural and urban environments. His captivating images of forests, fields, lakes and open countryside trace industrial damage and the changing pattern of the earth. His evocative photography and striking drawings have received numerous awards, including the World Press Photo Award (2009, 2014, 2015), the Picture of the Year International POYI Award (2012, 2014, 2015, 2016), along with many others. His first photography book, “Side Effects” was published in 2014 and won the prestigious Best Photography Book Award in the Picture of the Year contest. Last year he released his second book “Over”, rigorously monochromatic even if photographed in colour. Photographs from both projects are displayed all over the world.

Kacper Kowalski è un artista polacco che vive e lavora a Gdynia, Polonia. Proveniente dal mondo dell’architettura, Kowalski ha scelto di dedicarsi completamente alla fotografia aerea. Pilota e fotografo, ritrae ambienti e paesaggi naturali e urbani colti in volo. Le sue immagini accattivanti di boschi, campi, laghi e aperta campagna denunciano i disastri ambientali dell’era industriale i segni del cambiamento della terra. La sua spettacolare fotografia e i sorprendenti disegni hanno ricevuto numerosi premi, fra cui il World Press Photo Award (2009, 2014, 2015), la Fotografia dell’Anno al concorso internazionale POYi (2012, 2014, 2015, 2016) e molti altri ancora. Il suo primo libro fotografico, ‘Side Effects’ è stato pubblicato nel 2014 ed ha vinto il prestigioso premio Best Photoghaphy Book nel contest Picture of the Year. Le immagini del suo progetto sono esposte in tutto il mondo.

CARLO ROMITI PAINTING

Italian artist Carlo Romiti, was born in Castelfiorentino and graduated from the Accademia di Belle Arti in Florence. Carlo Romiti lives in the countryside between San Gimignano and Volterra where the local ‘terra’ (soil) provides the material behind his striking contemporary works. Carlo Romiti’s thought-provoking works are created using the natural colours offered by the chromatic array of the soils, meticulously chosen to represent the land where he lives and works. Romiti’s powerful and fervent pieces are created using earth he collects from the land where he lives. His depictions of landscapes and animals are his means to rediscovering the ancestral part that dwells within each one of us. A director of a theatre workshop at the Visual Arts Centre in Certaldo since 1987, Romiti has collaborated in the publication of texts and arts research at the Facoltà di Magistero at the University of Florence. He also teaches painting techniques for the Educational Departments of the Uffizi and the Museum of Prehistory in Florence.

Carlo Romiti, nato a Castelfiorentino, si è laureato all’Accademia delle Belle Arti di Firenze. Vive nella campagna fra San Gimignano e Volterra, dove la terra gli fornisce lo strumento che si cela dietro le sue impressionanti opere. Il proseguire di una tecnica antica di millenni e la ricerca continua sul colore e sulle sue applicazioni, sono le sue fonti di ispirazione: è la terra stessa, o una sua diversa tonalità a suggerire l’opera, in un alternarsi di priorità tra soggetto e colore. I suoi cavalli, i suoi cani e nel vicino bosco caprioli e cinghiali sono, insieme al paesaggio, i soggetti preferiti ed il mezzo per ritrovare la parte ancestrale che è in ognuno di noi. Direttore del Laboratorio Teatrale del Centro Arti Visive del Comune di Certaldo dal 1987, Romiti ha collaborato alla pubblicazione di testi e ricerche artistiche alla Facoltà di Magistero dell’Università di Firenze. Tiene anche corsi sulle tecniche pittoriche per la Sezione Didattica degli Uffizi e al Museo di Preistoria di Firenze.

LORENZO CIANCHI  SCULPTURE

Lorenzo Cianchi was born in Empoli in 1985. After gaining a degree in sculpture from the Academy of Fine Arts of Carrara in 2009, he specialised at the Tokyo Zokei University in Japan. He collaborates with groups and collectives, proposing projects that often foresee a form of participation and collaboration. He acquired experience in the field of theatre and the performing arts by working for the theatre ‘I Macelli’ in Certaldo (Florence). He has taken part in numerous group shows, including the Mediterranea 16 Young Artists Biennale (Ancona) in 2013 and Smuggling Anthologies at the Rijeka Contemporary Art Museum (Croatia). In 2014 he founded the Rio Grande design collective in Milan with Natascia Fenoglio and Francesco Valtolina, producing projects for the London Design Biennale and the Kunsthalle Museum in Vienna.

Lorenzo Cianchi è nato a Empoli nel 1985. Dopo la laurea in scultura all’Accademia di Belle Arti di Carrara nel 2009 si specializza alla Tokyo Zokei University in Giappone. Collabora con gruppi e collettivi, proponendo progetti che spesso prevedono una forma partecipata e collaborativa. Ha maturato esperienza in ambito teatrale e performativo lavorando per il teatro I Macelli di Certaldo (Firenze). Ha partecipato a numerose mostre collettive, fra cui la XVI Biennale dei giovani artisti del Mediterraneo (Ancona) nel 2013 e Smuggling Anthologies presso il Rijeka Contemporary Art Museum (Croazia). Nel 2014 ha fondato a Milano il collettivo di design Rio Grande con Natascia Fenoglio e Francesco Valtolina, realizzando progetti per la London Design Biennale e la Kunsthalle Museum di Vienna.
